Attendance Information DID YOU KNOW? A student is considered truant at 3 unexcused absences A student is considered habitually truant at 6 unexcused events Parents are mailed truancy letters at 3 and 6 unexcused absences, and 6 & 9 unexcused tardies A referral for educational neglect can begin at 12 unexcused absences or 15 unexcused tardies What is an excused absence or tardy? An absence or tardy is excused under the following circumstances: Death in the student’s immediate family. Illness of the student Religious holidays and practices Medical and dental appointments Family emergencies requiring immediate attention are limited to (3) cumulative absent events per school year; as approved by the Principal. Court appearance requiring the student’s attendance. Documented military leave Educational Enhancement Opportunity Other valid reasons as determined by the Principal. * Excused absences must be documented in writing to the attendance clerk within 3 days of the absence How many parent notes can I use? Parents can use up to ten (10) parent notes for excused absences. Parents also have ten (10) notes for tardies. After the 10 notes are used, absences become unexcused without a doctor’s note. How should I make sure my child’s excuse notes get to the office? It is the parent’s responsibility to ensure excuse notes are received by the attendance clerk. Parents should contact the attendance clerk or social worker to follow up if a note has been received. If giving students notes to bring in to school, ensure the student knows the letter should be delivered to the front office.
